URGENT Call to Action PDF Print E-mail
*16th. April. 2008*

Yesterday, Wednesday, 15th April 2009, the Parliament of Uganda, during its
session, came out strongly against homosexuality in Uganda. Ethics and
Integrity minister Dr. James Nsaba Buturo, who is also on the fore front of
toughening the law on homosexuality, presented a hard-hitting statement to
Parliament on homosexuality during the session. He said as the MPs cheered,
*“It is important that we do not compromise on the values that we stand
for.”.  After Hon. Nsaba Buturo’s statement, several MPs condemned
homosexuality and called for stern action.* They also criticized the
Government for not blocking the press conference that we convened as
homosexuals in Kampala recently.  In his statement the minister blamed
international and local human rights organizations for promoting
homosexuality in Uganda and said both promoters and apologists of
homosexuality, are using all tricks to have homosexuality legalized in
Uganda.  Among the organizations named are, The UN children‘s agency,
Unicef, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Frontline Human Rights
Defenders and East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders. He said, *the
Government would enact a more comprehensive law that will treat as illegal
the promotion of homosexuality and membership to homosexual groups. *

This is as a result of the anti - gay seminar held in Uganda March 5th to 7
th 2009, organized by the Family Life Network– FLN, and supported by anti
gay U.S. religious right. The US anti gay activist that facilitated the
workshop were Scott Lively, co-founder of the hate group Watchmen on the
walls and author of The Pink Swastika, , Caleb Lee Brundidge, a “sexual
reorientation coach” for the International Healing Foundation,  and Don
Schmierer,  board member of Exodus International.

Following the seminar FLN initiated the *Anti gay task force* mainly
comprised of religious anti gay groups, parents and ex gay Ugandans such as
Oundo George and Kagaba Paul. In their anti gay campaign FLN and its
followers “outed” members of the LGBTI community, naming LGBTI organizations
and names of LGBTI leaders and individuals in the media.  They further
accused the Ugandan gay movement of recruiting school children into
homosexuality. How we came out strongly and refuted these allegations in a
press conference.

The Family Life Network – FLN, threatened to petition the government of
Uganda, to enact tougher laws on homosexuality.  They have been collecting
signatures from the public for a petition to be presented to parliament
tomorrow, Friday, 17th April 2009 requesting for a tougher law against
homosexuality and LGBTI rights activism in Uganda.

Homosexuals in Uganda are living in fear and tension, two arrests pending
trail have been registered, hostility and homophobia from the Ugandan
society towards homosexuals is on the increase.
